St. Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru on December 9, 1579. Martin was the illegitimate son to a Spanish gentleman and a freed slave. Martin grew to become a Dominican lay brother in 1603 at the age of 24. Ten years later, after he had been presented with the religious habit of a lay brother, Martin was assigned to the infirmary where he would remain in charge until his death. He became known for encompassing the virtues need to carefully and patiently care for the sick, even in the most difficult situations.  It is said he had many extraordinary abilities, including aerial flights, bilocation, instant cures, miraculous knowledge, spiritual knowledge and an excellent relationship with animals. Martin also founded an orphanage for abandoned children and slaves. He has become the patron saint of people of mixed race.

 San Martín de Porres nació en Lima, Perú, el 9 de diciembre de 1579. Martín era hijo ilegítimo de un caballero español y un esclavo liberado. Martín creció hasta convertirse en hermano laico dominico en 1603 a la edad de 24 años. Diez años más tarde, después de que le entregaron el hábito religioso de hermano laico, Martín fue asignado a la enfermería donde permanecería a cargo hasta su muerte. Se hizo conocido por abarcar las virtudes necesarias para cuidar con cuidado y paciencia a los enfermos, incluso en las situaciones más difíciles. Se dice que tenía muchas habilidades extraordinarias, entre ellas vuelos aéreos, bilocación, curas instantáneas, conocimientos milagrosos, conocimientos espirituales y una excelente relación con los animales. Martin también fundó un orfanato para niños abandonados y esclavos. Se ha convertido en el santo patrón de las personas de raza mestiza.

Let us pray, O God, who did make St. Martin, your confessor, to enter the heavenly Kingdom, grant through his merits and intercession that we may so follow the example of his humility on earth as to deserve to be exalted with him in Heaven. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
