Our History

The history of Sacred Heart Parish is a part the history of the city of Denver and the state of Colorado itself. We are the third parish of the territory founded in 1879 by the first bishop of Denver (and all of Colorado at that point) Bishop Joseph Machebeuf. The church building itself is the old operating church of any denomination in the city and one of the oldest in the entire state as well. Servant of God Julia Greeley, an emancipated slave and convert to the Catholic Faith, was a parishioner of Sacred Heart and may one day be a canonized saint of the Church. She herself prayed in these walls, spread the Faith through these streets, and loved and served her neighbors. Though she died in 1918, her holy example is looked up to as a model on how to truly love and serve the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This neighborhood is one of the oldest in Denver and the neighborhoods of Five Points and RiNo are in need of her holy intercession and example as much as ever in this rapidly changing area. It is my hope as pastor of this parish that Sacred Heart Parish will become the true heart of the neighborhood and that many visitors and new locals will be drawn to know, love, and serve the Lord Jesus Christ, true God and true man, and encounter the true beauty of the Catholic Faith He has given us.

Nuestra Historia

FIRST MILLION PROGRAM

This year’s Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is more important than ever. The first million in donated funds will go directly to parishes to help mitigate the decrease in general offertory during this pandemic. Thank you for your generosity towards this year’s Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal.

Give Today

Behold the Heart that has so loved men that it has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming Itself, in order to testify to Its love.

Words of Jesus to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in prayer.

Welcome

Welcome to the Sacred Heart parish webpage.  We’re a growing, diverse parish in the heart of Denver’s River North (RiNo) neighborhood, offering daily and weekend Masses in a beautiful historic building.  Fun fact(s): Sacred Heart is the third Catholic church built in Colorado, and Servant of God Julia Greeley, an emancipated slave who became known as “Denver’s Angel of Charity”, called Sacred Heart her home parish.

I grew up in Aurora, Colorado, and was ordained a priest in December 2013. I served as the parochial vicar for two and a half years at Saint Stephen Protomartyr in Glenwood Springs, followed by Light of the World in Littleton for three years before being named pastor at Sacred Heart in June 2019.

I look forward to welcoming you to the Sacred Heart parish community.
